About AfSI

Africa's voice in global sustainability

AfSI is a pan-African, independent, non-profit institution established to strengthen the sustainability, integrity, competitiveness, and resilience of African value chains. We produce credible data, develop standards, monitor risks, verify sustainability claims, and provide decision-making tools to governments, investors, and producer organizations.

Our goal is to ensure that African realities, priorities, and development objectives are fully reflected in global sustainability frameworks — so that compliance does not come at the cost of inclusion.

Vision

Africa as the global leader in sustainable value chains

We envision Africa positioned as the global leader in sustainable, resilient, traceable, inclusive, and competitive value chains — creating prosperity for producers, protecting ecosystems, attracting responsible investment, and contributing to global sustainability goals.

Mission

Institutions, intelligence, and advocacy for Africa

To provide Africa with the institutions, intelligence, verification systems, standards, research, and advocacy necessary to build trusted sustainable value chains — while ensuring fair economic opportunities for African producers and communities.

Core Objectives

Seven pillars of action

01
Sustainability Compliance

Support African countries in adapting to international sustainability regulations, deforestation-free supply chains, ESG requirements, and climate reporting.

02
African Standards

Promote sustainability standards adapted to African realities. Support national adaptations, develop African benchmarks, and facilitate mutual recognition mechanisms.

03
Supply Chain Integrity

Ensure sustainability claims are supported by verifiable evidence through traceability, verification, chain-of-custody systems, risk mapping, and fraud prevention.

04
Smallholder Inclusion

Provide technical assistance, facilitate certification readiness, support producer organizations, improve market access, and promote digital inclusion and access to finance.

05
Sustainability Intelligence

Produce reliable information through research, data collection, policy analysis, risk assessment, impact evaluation, and scenario analysis for evidence-based decisions.

06
Fair Value Distribution

Study income gaps, promote living income approaches, analyze value distribution, support fair pricing mechanisms, and advocate for equitable benefit-sharing.

07
Carbon Market Integrity

Africa holds enormous potential in carbon markets. AfSI supports carbon project verification, community safeguards, and the development of credible African carbon credits.
